How does congestion occur?
Airways in horses become congested in response to airborne particles such as dust, pollen and moulds. It is crucial to free the airway of inhaled particulates and also to ward of the potential for secondary bacterial infections. Blocked or congested airways not only cause distress but can, in turn, cause chronic or acute conditions such as heaves to equine pneumonia.
Mucous can also be triggered in response to an allergen. This is the bodies attempt to capture the particles where the body can then remove. However, when congestion is thick it may need the help of a product like Expel to assist in removal.
It is best practise to reduce the mucus and take practical steps to reduce allergens.
In some cases, horses also require Expel with coughs and colds, freeing mucus from the airway.
